Guide to Stretching Shoes and Making Them Comfortable

How to stretch shoes

From stiff sneakers to overly hard leather combat boots to narrow-toed patent leather pumps, every new pair of shoes requires a "break-in" period before they achieve the perfect fit. Likewise, even shoes we've been wearing for a long time can become uncomfortable over the years. Exposure to extreme weather conditions like heat or humidity, excessive foot sweating, or simply the natural aging of materials can cause shoes to shrink.

The good news? There are tons of ways to stretch your shoes and ensure a comfortable fit. In this guide, we'll help you discover the most effective strategies, based on the material of your shoes.

Each material has unique characteristics that influence not only the appearance and comfort of the shoes, but also their ability to adapt to the shape of the foot.

Use ice to make canvas shoes more comfortable

Canvas shoes can be stretched out using the freezing method. Fill two airtight plastic bags with water and place them, tightly sealed, inside the shoes. Finally, wrap the shoes in plastic bags and place them in the freezer for several hours. The water will freeze, loosening the fabric of the shoe. Just be careful not to let the water drip inside your new sneakers!

Your phone is your greatest ally for leather shoes

Leather or faux leather shoes, like Nikes, can sometimes feel too tight at the toe. Leather, however, is a material that "learns" and adapts. Wear thick socks and heat the tightest areas with a hair dryer to loosen the shoes. Patience and gradualness are key: be careful not to use this method for too long or you'll dissolve the glue!

Stretch out suede shoes with newspaper and socks

Suede, being a soft leather, requires special care. In addition to alcohol, there are specific sprays and creams that help stretch and soften suede, ensuring a perfect fit. Another way to soften your suede shoes is to stuff them with crumpled newspaper or rolled-up socks until they are loose enough.

Always rely on the advice of an expert!

Every type of shoe has its own unique characteristics. Especially for more technical shoes, like soccer or tennis shoes, it may be helpful to consult an expert shoemaker. If you have any questions or concerns, at Scarpediem we're here to offer you valuable advice!
