How to wash shoes in the washing machine without ruining them

When it comes to cleaning shoes, there are many questions. Can they be machine washed? If so, on what cycles? And how should they be dried properly? In this article, we aim to answer all these questions with a comprehensive guide on how to clean shoes effectively and safely.

Which shoes can be machine washed?

Washing shoes in the washing machine is a quick and practical solution, but it's essential to first make sure the type of shoe is suitable for this cleaning method to avoid irreparable damage. Here are the types of shoes that can be machine washed:

  • Sneakers or trekking shoes
  • Sneakers in fabric or canvas
  • Children's shoes made of synthetic materials or canvas

Caution: Even if a pair of shoes seems suitable for the washing machine, it is always advisable to read the label or the cleaning instructions provided by the manufacturer.

Washing Machine Cleaning: Programs, Detergents, and Tips

In general, when washing shoes in the washing machine, it's best to use a delicate cycle with a spin speed of 600 rpm or less. The temperature should be below 30°C.

As for detergents, it's best to use gentle liquid products that respect the materials and colors of the shoes. We do not recommend using fabric softener, which could alter the shape and structure of the shoes.

Although the washing machine offers a convenient solution for cleaning shoes, it is essential to take some precautions:

  • Place your shoes inside a pillowcase to protect them during the wash cycle.
  • Remove the laces and wash them separately to prevent possible damage or tangling.

Finally, if your shoes have removable insoles, we recommend removing them and washing them separately.

How to dry shoes properly?

Drying your shoes properly after cleaning is essential to preserving their shape and durability. Once clean, remove excess water by gently patting them with a dry cloth or paper towel. Then stuff the shoes with newspaper to help them retain their shape while drying.

But above all, avoid direct heat sources! Don't place wet shoes near radiators, stoves, or in direct sunlight, as this can damage or deform the shoes. Instead, choose a well-ventilated, shaded area.
